The Carolina Reaper is the most famous super hot pepper on the planet. The RB003 pepper might be hotter. If you're trying to decide which one to grow this season, here's everything you need to know, from someone who grows both in isolation on a farm in Nebraska.

Heat: Which One Is Actually Hotter?

The Carolina Reaper held the Guinness World Record from 2013 to 2023, averaging 1,641,183 SHU with individual pods testing above 2.2 million. Pepper X took the title in 2023.

The RB003 doesn't have an official Guinness entry, but it's an Australian bred cross between the Carolina Reaper and the 7 Pot Brainstrain, two of the hottest peppers ever measured. It was bred in Queensland by Ross Barber, and the RB in the name is his initials. Grower estimates commonly put it at 2 million SHU or more, but we have not found a published lab test to confirm a figure. Many growers who've tried both say the RB003 hits harder.

Here's the honest answer: the RB003 is probably hotter on average, but without official lab testing under Guinness conditions, it's hard to say definitively. What I can tell you from growing both is that the RB003's heat builds more aggressively and the peak feels higher. The Reaper hits you faster but the RB003 just keeps climbing.

Flavor: They're More Different Than You'd Expect

The Carolina Reaper has a sweet, fruity front end with hints of chocolate and citrus. For about one second, it actually tastes good. Then the heat arrives and you forget what flavor is. But that initial sweetness is what makes Reaper hot sauce so popular: there's real complexity under the pain.

The RB003 leans more floral and citrusy. The fruity notes are there but they're brighter and more aromatic, probably from the 7 Pot Brainstrain parentage. It's a more exotic flavor profile. If you're making hot sauce, the RB003 gives you something different from the standard Reaper sauce everyone else is making.

Growing: How Do They Compare in the Garden?

Both need the same basic setup: start indoors 8 to 12 weeks before last frost, heat mat for germination (80 to 85°F soil temps), full sun, long season.

The key difference is difficulty. The Carolina Reaper is moderate. It's been stabilized over many generations and is relatively predictable. Good germination rates, consistent pod production, reliable heat levels.

The RB003 is advanced. It's an experimental variety, which means more variability. Some plants produce more than others. Some pods are hotter than others. The genetics are newer and less stabilized. That's part of the appeal for serious growers, since you're working with something on the cutting edge. But if you want a reliable, predictable grow, the Reaper is the safer bet.

Both grow well in Nebraska (I grow them in USDA Zone 5b), and both do fine in containers. Give them 5 gallon buckets minimum and as much sun as you can.

Which One Should You Grow?

Grow the Carolina Reaper if:

  • You want the former world record holder, the pepper everyone knows
  • You're making hot sauce and want a proven, crowd pleasing flavor
  • You're newer to super hots and want something more predictable
  • You want to compete or show off (the Reaper name carries weight)
  • You want the most resources and growing guides available online

Grow the RB003 if:

  • You want something potentially hotter than the Reaper
  • You're a collector or heat chaser who wants the next level
  • You want to experiment with a newer, less common variety
  • You're making hot sauce and want a unique flavor nobody else has
  • You've already grown Reapers and want a new challenge

Or grow both. They're the same price, same seed count, and take the same amount of space. Plant one of each and decide for yourself. That's what I'd do.

Both Are Isolation Grown

Every Carolina Reaper and RB003 seed we sell is grown in isolation on our farm in Polk, Nebraska. Each variety gets its own isolation tent to keep pollinators out. That greatly reduces the chance of a cross, to around 4%, though no isolation method is a 100% guarantee.

This matters more with experimental varieties like the RB003. If you're buying RB003 seeds from someone who grows them next to other peppers, you might get a cross that's less hot or tastes different. Our isolation growing means your seed should grow true to type.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the RB003 hotter than the Carolina Reaper?

Probably, but it hasn't been officially tested under Guinness conditions. The RB003 is a cross between the Carolina Reaper and 7 Pot Brainstrain, and grower estimates commonly put it at 2 million SHU or more, though we have not found a published lab test to confirm a figure. Most growers who've tried both say the RB003 hits harder.

What does RB003 stand for?

RB are the initials of Ross Barber, the Queensland, Australia grower who bred the cross, and 003 is his number for this line. It's not a marketing name. It's a breeding project identifier, which is part of what makes it appealing to collectors and serious growers.

Can I grow Carolina Reaper and RB003 side by side?

You can grow them in the same garden, but if you plan to save seeds, be aware that bees can cross pollinate them. The plants and pods will be fine, because cross pollination only affects the next generation of seeds. If you want to save pure seeds from either variety, you'll need to isolate them or hand pollinate.

Which makes better hot sauce, Carolina Reaper or RB003?

Both make excellent hot sauce. The Reaper gives you a sweet, fruity, chocolatey base that blends well with almost anything. The RB003 is more floral and citrusy, so it'll give you a more unique, exotic sauce. If you're selling hot sauce, the Reaper name on the label carries more recognition. If you want something nobody else has, go with the RB003.

Are your Carolina Reaper and RB003 seeds isolation grown?

Yes. Both varieties are grown in isolation on our farm in Polk, Nebraska. Each gets its own isolation tent to keep pollinators out, which greatly reduces the chance of a cross to around 4%. Seed from us should grow true to type, though no isolation method is a 100% guarantee.
